MALANDROS IN ACTION (3/4/25)… What is a Malandro, exactly?

Hi family,

I know I cover the definition of a Malandro on one of the permament PAGES, but I want to go over it again, to clarify what this series is about.

What is a Malandro? In Capoeira circles, there is a lot of things said about what a malandro is, representing a unique cultural archetype that embodies a blend of cunning, charm, and grace. The malandro is often seen as a trickster, one who navigates through both the complexities of life and the movements within the Capoeira game with a certain finesse that captivates those around them. This character is more than just a performer; they possess an innate ability to read the energy of the roda, adjusting their strategies and movements to flow seamlessly with the rhythm of the game and the interactions with other players.

They often use their wit and cleverness to turn challenges into opportunities, showcasing a playful resilience that draws admiration and respect from those around them. This ability to adapt and thrive in various situations not only highlights their intelligence but also reflects a deep-seated understanding of human nature and social dynamics. The essence of a malandro is deeply intertwined with the philosophy of Capoeira, which celebrates not only martial skill but also artistic expression and social commentary. I created the “Malandros in Action” series, so we can explore the “Modern malandro” in contemporary society, examining their cunning strategies to evade deception and navigate the complexities of urban life. Although the malandro has a deep connection to the rich traditions of Capoeira, most of the individuals I’m showcasing are not capoeiristas, which allows us to broaden our understanding of this archetype. These individuals, often characterized by their resourcefulness and charm, harness their unique skills to outsmart conventional systems, deftly maneuvering through societal expectations and constraints. Their presence is not just about physical prowess; it also embodies a philosophy of resilience and adaptability, making the Malandro an essential figure in the Capoeira community and beyond. Masaru Emoto’s Water Experiment. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese author and researcher, claimed that human emotions could influence the molecular structure of water in profound ways. In his groundbreaking experiments, Emoto exposed water to a variety of emotional stimuli, such as positive or negative thoughts, words, and even music, observing the reactions closely. He would then freeze the water samples and examine their crystal formations under a microscope, revealing striking differences in the structures based on the type of energy the water was exposed to.

For instance, water exposed to loving words or uplifting music formed beautiful, intricate crystals, while water subjected to negative thoughts or harsh language produced distorted and chaotic formations. Emoto’s work sparked significant interest and controversy, challenging conventional views about the nature of water and the potential impact of human consciousness, leading many to explore the connections between emotions, environment, and physical matter more deeply.

I’ve been fascinated by this experiment for a while now, and though Dr. Emoto has had his DETRACTORS over the years, who often question the validity of his methods and results, this experiment is backed up by scientific research that delves into the intricate relationship between water and human emotion. The implications of his work suggest that our thoughts and feelings can physically influence the molecular structure of water, which opens up an entirely new perspective on how we should view our interactions with the world around us.

With advancements in quantum physics and consciousness studies continuing to emerge, I think everyone should check this out, as it challenges conventional scientific paradigms and encourages a deeper exploration of the unseen forces that shape our reality.

This area was not only characterized by its vibrant societies and complex political structures but also by its diverse languages, art forms, and traditions that reflected the deep-rooted connections of its people to their land.

The Kongo played a pivotal role in trade networks, facilitating the exchange of goods, culture, and ideas long before the onset of the slave trade. Kôngo spirituality includes a wide variety of concepts grouped around two areas of application: divine practice and human practice. This intricate system encompasses not only rituals and beliefs but also the profound relationship between the spiritual and the material realms, reflecting the interconnectedness of life.

This lecture aims to elucidate this wealth, with regard to Palo and Bukôngo as two different schools of Kôngo spirituality, both of which offer unique perspectives and methodologies for understanding the universe and one’s place within it. The Angoleiro’s Philosophy of Dependence: The Necessity of the Other

For an Angoleiro, dependence is not about manipulative control; it is about establishing oneself as an indispensable resource. The very nature of Capoeira Angola—a dialogue, a conversation played out through movement, music, and ritual—demands the presence and active participation of others.

  1. The Mastery of Specific, Rare Skills (Os Segredos – The Secrets):
    • Indispensable Knowledge: An Angoleiro seeks out and masters aspects of the art that others neglect or find difficult. This could be the deep, historical knowledge of the toques (rhythms), the ability to repair, tune, or craft a perfect berimbau (the primary instrument), or a profound understanding of the forgotten movimentos (movements) and their practical applications.
    • The Power of the Instrumentalist: The person who truly masters the berimbau and leads the bateria (orchestra) is the heart of the roda. By controlling the rhythm and the songs, they control the energy, speed, and even the “mood” of the game. The roda depends completely on this person to exist and thrive, granting them a subtle but undeniable form of authority.
    • The Keeper of the Culture: The Angoleiro ensures they are the go-to source for authentic ritual, history, and Portuguese song lyrics, making their presence necessary for the group to maintain its cultural integrity and depth.
  2. Creating a Resource Economy within the Group:
    • The Teacher’s Hook: A wise teacher (Mestre) never gives all their knowledge away at once. They dispense it in measured, sometimes cryptic, doses. This creates a powerful desire in the student to remain close, to continue learning, and to demonstrate loyalty for the next piece of the puzzle. The student depends on the Mestre for their growth and initiation into deeper levels of the art.
    • The Utility of the Student: Conversely, the Mestre can make themselves dependent on the student in a positive way. They may assign a student the specific task of organizing events, maintaining the space (Academia), or managing the instruments. By assigning crucial, non-transferable responsibilities, the Mestre ensures the student feels valued and necessary, solidifying the student’s commitment.
  3. The Dynamic of the Roda (The Game):
    • Setting the Stage for the Other: In the game itself, the best Angoleiro is one who sets up their partner perfectly, either for a beautiful exchange or a clever trap. A player who consistently provides an engaging, challenging, and meaningful game—who makes their opponent look good, or who is the only one capable of truly testing them—becomes a highly sought-after partner. Their presence in the roda elevates the entire experience, making others dependent on their participation for the game to be worthwhile.

The Warning: Avoiding the Trap of Complete Control
The Angoleiro understands that this dependence must be managed carefully. If one becomes too necessary, the burden can become heavy, leading to resentment or even an attempt to overthrow the dependency structure. Therefore, the dependence cultivated is one of specialized utility, not total servitude. It is a reciprocal, necessary relationship that benefits the whole community, ensuring the Angoleiro remains central without stifling the growth of others. The goal is to be the indispensable pivot around which the roda turns, not the anchor that prevents it from moving.
