A MESSAGE FROM THE PROFESSOR

I should have posted this last night, but here we are.

Last week, two Black men successfully intervened to halt an active shooter who was engaged in a violent rampage. Although the general public has widely acclaimed these individuals as heroes for their bravery and quick action, a contrasting narrative has emerged within certain media outlets. This white-led media coverage has reportedly initiated a smear campaign, suggesting that these Good Samaritans should potentially face prosecution for their involvement in the incident.

This divergence in reporting highlights a significant tension between community-led recognition and institutional media framing. While witnesses and local residents have praised the men for risking their lives to prevent further casualties, some news organizations have focused on the legality of their intervention. These reports often scrutinize the specific tactics used by the men, raising questions about whether their actions exceeded the bounds of self-defense or citizen intervention. Critics argue that this selective focus serves to undermine the heroic nature of their actions and contributes to a broader pattern of criminalizing Black individuals, even when they act in the interest of public safety.
