Reclaiming the Open Web: A Call to Digital Freedom

Do you remember when the internet felt like an open highway? You could wander across independent websites, discover quirky personal blogs, and control your own little corner of the digital universe.

Today, that open highway has been paved over by digital landlords. We spend our lives inside “walled gardens”—tightly controlled proprietary platforms that harvest our data, algorithmically dictate our reality, and rent our attention back to us.

The new documentary short Code for the People, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Bao Nguyen (known for Netflix’s The Greatest Night in Pop), tackles this modern crisis head-on. Funded by Automattic (the team behind WordPress), this 20-minute film serves as a powerful rallying cry to protect the open web before it is entirely consolidated by corporate power.

Here are the vital takeaways from the film, and why the battle over open-source software matters to every single one of us.

1. The State of the Web: Trapped in Walled Gardens

The early internet was built on open protocols like HTTP and HTML—languages that anyone could use to build, share, and connect without a corporate gatekeeper.

Nguyen’s film contrasts that democratic past with our current reality. Today, an elite handful of tech monopolies have built immense fences around the digital commons. When you publish content on platforms like Meta, TikTok, or X, you do not own that space. You are locked into their proprietary algorithms. If they change their terms of service or modify their visibility parameters, your digital footprint can vanish overnight.

2. Open Source as a Technological Democracy

If corporate monopolies are the problem, open-source software is the antidote. Code for the People frames open source not just as technical code, but as a deeply human philosophy of freedom.

Unlike proprietary software—where companies hide their code behind legal walls—open-source code is public property. Anyone can study it, modify it, audit it for security flaws, and share it.

  • Crowdsourced Security: Because a global community of developers can review open code, vulnerabilities are patched transparently rather than swept under a corporate rug.
  • True User Autonomy: Users cannot be held hostage by sudden price hikes or software deprecation. If you don’t like the direction a tool is heading, you can copy the code and build your own version.

3. The Lessons of WordPress: Democratizing the Internet

To prove that open source works at scale, the documentary chronicles the rise of WordPress. Founded in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little, WordPress began as a humble side project. Today, it powers over 40% of the entire internet.

[ Early Static Web ] ➔ Intertwined code; required developers for minor updates.
           ↓
[ The CMS Revolution ] ➔ Separated design from content; empowered creators.
           ↓
[ Modern Open Web ] ➔ WordPress powers 40%+ of sites via global collaboration.

WordPress succeeded because it broke down technical barriers. It gave independent journalists, small businesses, and casual creators a free Content Management System (CMS) to launch professional websites without needing to write complex code. Its growth wasn’t fueled by Wall Street venture capital, but by an organic, global community of volunteers building free themes and plugins.

4. Digital Real Estate: Are You a Tenant or a Landowner?

One of the most compelling arguments in Code for the People is the distinction between digital tenancy and digital land ownership.

Digital Tenant (Closed Platforms)Digital Landowner (The Open Web)
Rent Space: You rely entirely on third-party platform infrastructure.Own Your Domain: You purchase your unique web address and server space.
No Data Control: The platform owns, controls, and monetizes your data.Data Sovereignty: You have total control and ultimate privacy over your content.
Algorithmic Risk: Changes to an algorithm can destroy your reach or livelihood.Permanent Independent Home: Your site remains online as long as you want it there.

Building your business or brand solely on social media means you are renting space from a billionaire landlord. True independence means owning your domain name and running it on self-hosted, open software.

5. AI and the Next Frontier of Control

The film concludes with an urgent look at artificial intelligence—the newest battleground for digital freedom.

Nguyen warns that closed-source, “black-box” AI systems threaten to centralize the collective knowledge of humanity. These corporate systems scrape the open web to train models, only to lock the resulting tools behind strict paywalls and restricted corporate APIs.

Conversely, open-source AI keeps model datasets and weights transparent. This ensures that humanity’s next great technological leap is built collaboratively, safely, and accessibly for everyone—not just a few elite boardrooms in Silicon Valley.

Reclaim Your Digital Freedom

As director Bao Nguyen notes, tech narratives are too often dystopian. Code for the People aims to be “protopian”—offering practical, real-world solutions to build a better future using shared human values.

The web belongs to all of us. We can continue to hand our data to gatekeepers, or we can choose to support open software, own our content, and keep the internet free.

Capoeira Angola’s philosophy of open-source collaboration, resilience, and community-driven knowledge closely mirrors the ethos of the open web movement described in the documentary Code for the People. Just as open-source software relies on a global, transparent community to audit code and patch vulnerabilities, the roda functions as a communal “living archive” where participants collectively preserve and adapt cultural traditions, ensuring the art evolves without reliance on centralized, proprietary control. \

Both movements share a fundamental rejection of “walled gardens”—whether digital platforms that harvest data or corporate structures that lock away cultural knowledge—favoring instead the democratization of access, the protection of shared heritage, and the empowerment of independent creators to own their unique digital or cultural footprint.

This structural parallel is rooted in a shared commitment to decentralized sovereignty and horizontal learning. In Capoeira Angola, knowledge transmission is fundamentally oral, experiential, and collective, intentionally bypassing rigid, exclusionary, and Eurocentric institutional formats. The roda operates under an interactive, call-and-response framework (antiphony) where bodies, instruments, and singers engage in an ongoing, multi-layered dialogue. This process creates a collective, distributed form of security and cultural memory.

Much like an open-source development project where individual contributions merge into a public resource, the roda thrives on the collaborative synergy of its participants rather than individual mastery. Within the traditional “academia model,” this ethos expands into an all-encompassing way of living, where shared labor, communal responsibilities, and practical respect extend beyond formal boundaries. Practitioners cultivate a deep sense of ongoing obligation and long-term ethical dedication known as compromisso. Through this continuous collective effort, the inherited legacy remains dynamic and self-sustaining, providing practitioners with tactical intelligence and adaptive strategies to navigate broader social challenges and preserve their autonomy.

Take Action: How to Stop Renting and Start Owning

You don’t have to completely delete your social media accounts to fight back, but you should stop letting them be your entire digital home. Here is how you can step out of the walled gardens today:

  • Claim Your Domain: Visit an independent registrar and purchase your own name or brand domain (yourname.com). This is your permanent deed to digital land.
  • Build on Open Source: Set up a self-hosted website using free software like WordPress.org, Ghost, or Drupal. You choose your host, you control your layout, and you own every single pixel.
  • Export Your Data: Use the built-in backup tools on platforms like Instagram, X, or LinkedIn to download an archive of your content. Back it up to an external drive or cloud space that you control.
  • Support the Open Web: Look for open-source, privacy-first alternatives for your daily digital tools—like Signal for messaging, Firefox or Brave for browsing, and ProtonMail for email.

Don’t wait for a sudden algorithm shift or platform shutdown to destroy your digital footprint. Take control of your data, invest in your own platform, and build a web presence that truly belongs to you.

Today’s Focus: The Scrutiny of Online Authenticity

The shift toward digital commerce has brought new forms of sales tactics, demanding a heightened level of consumer scrutiny.

A Word of Caution for the Digital Consumer:

Don’t be swayed by spurious sales pitches. Specifically, don’t buy stuff from “cry babies” on TikTok. The use of highly emotional and often manipulative appeals has become a significant marketing trend. We encourage reflection: What other pervasive marketing tactics are you running into?

Investigating Emotional Appeals in E-Commerce:

The pervasive advice remains: Don’t fall for the emotional appeals of online sellers. Independent investigators are shedding light on the practices of digital vendors who rely on sob stories to drive sales.

  • Pleasant Green, a prominent digital investigator, has been spearheading the research into this specific TikTok trend of sob stories.
  • The investigation has uncovered surprising details about the origin and sales channels of certain products, exposing a disparity between the compelling narrative and the actual business operation.
  • The methodology involves deep dives into social media posts, scrutinizing associated websites, and utilizing powerful reverse image searches to authenticate or debunk the emotional claims made by sellers.

Mastering Holiday Budgeting Strategies.. A message from the professor

Black Friday has passed, and with the immediate rush of sales over, a dangerous sense of complacency is setting in, allowing people to fall back into detrimental habits. This period, stretching from the initial holiday sales events right through to the New Year, is historically the most perilous time for personal finance. It’s the season when consumers seem to collectively lose their minds, succumbing to the intense pressures of gift-giving, social expectations, and pervasive marketing, often resulting in them depleting their savings, maxing out credit cards, and accumulating significant debt.

The sheer volume of promotions—Cyber Monday deals, pre-Christmas sales, and end-of-year clearances—creates a non-stop, high-pressure environment that preys on the fear of missing out (FOMO). Retailers expertly leverage urgency and scarcity to push unnecessary purchases. It is vital for us to recognize this pattern of seasonal overspending and consciously take steps to protect ourselves. Our goal must be to avoid becoming another set of statistics—the financial casualties of the holiday shopping madness, emerging in January with buyer’s remorse and a mountain of bills. Prudent planning and strict adherence to a budget are the only defenses against this annual fiscal onslaught.

We extend our sincerest gratitude and appreciation to the professor for their invaluable work in creating and sharing this enlightening video. Their commitment to producing high-quality educational content is truly commendable.

MALANDROS IN ACTION (11/15/24)

While this doesn’t directly apply to his series, I do believe this is related in several significant ways that warrant further discussion. The themes explored in his work often intersect with broader societal issues, creating a rich tapestry of narrative and meaning.

Additionally, the nuances within his storytelling can be seen as reflections of contemporary challenges that resonate deeply with audiences, urging them to think critically about their own experiences in relation to the themes presented. Thus, even though it may not seem immediately relevant, the connections that can be drawn enrich the overall understanding and appreciation of his series.

A while ago, I posted this video with a message that I’ll be posting more about this subject in the future.

Well, today is that day.

One of my pet peeves is these fake “Prank” videos on YouTube, especially the so-called, “GOLD DIGGER PRANKS.” These videos have gained substantial traction, drawing viewers in with their sensational titles and exaggerated scenarios that often lack authenticity. Today, we’re gonna analyze the fake gold digger pranks seen prevalently throughout YouTube, where the art of deception is not just a storyline but a recurring theme that compromises integrity.

In the following videos, SPENCER CORNELIA breaks down these “Gold Digger” prank videos extensively, dissecting the narratives presented and revealing the calculated strategies behind them. In the breakdown, he delves into human psychology, exploring how these videos manipulate perceptions of female attraction and the behavioral traits that would turn any woman off. Through this analysis, he highlights why this is clearly a scripted video, exposing the disconnection between reality and the manufactured drama portrayed, which ultimately misleads the audience and perpetuates harmful stereotypes.

In this 1st video, we have HOOMANTV, who uploads “prank” videos that have gained immense popularity across social media platforms. In each of his elaborate productions, he employs a detailed script, flashy vehicles like Ferrari and other luxurious supercars, along with paid actresses who convincingly play their parts to pull off his stunts. Although I still don’t understand how he manages to maintain this illusion, it is fascinating to see that most of his millions of followers seem to genuinely believe that his “pranks” are real and spontaneous adventures.

This phenomenon raises questions about the nature of reality in entertainment and the depths of audience engagement in the digital age. As viewers navigate an endless stream of content, the distinctions between reality and entertainment become increasingly blurred, prompting deeper reflections on how this affects perception and understanding. For a deeper analysis, check out Spencer’s breakdown here, where he examines the techniques and psychological tactics used by content creators like Hooman to capture and hold viewer attention. Through strategic use of narrative devices, manipulation of emotional cues, and the deployment of interactive elements, these creators craft experiences that not only entertain but also resonate with audiences on a personal level, forging connections that enhance viewer loyalty and engagement. As such, the impact of these methods extends far beyond mere spectacle, inviting us to reconsider our own roles as consumers in this evolving landscape.

In the 2nd video, a dating expert from FRESH AND FIT highlights how fake gold digger pranks misrepresent real interactions between men and women. While intended for entertainment, these videos can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and create misguided expectations among young men about women’s behavior. Such misconceptions can lead to a distorted view of relationships, where men might start to believe that women are primarily motivated by financial gain, rather than genuine connections or shared interests. Furthermore, the sensationalism of these pranks can foster a culture of distrust between genders, making it more difficult for people to engage in authentic and meaningful relationships. By presenting exaggerated scenarios, these videos oversimplify the complexities of human interaction, ultimately contributing to broader social issues that hinder understanding and empathy.

The videos highlight a person with poor gaming skills, which serves to emphasize the contradiction in the Fresh And Fit duo’s claims as dating experts within the manosphere, a community that often fosters negative views and stereotypes about women. This situation raises important questions about the validity of their advice and the damaging implications it can have on aspiring men. They not only promote an ideology that emphasizes superficial tactics for attracting women but also actively sell courses designed to teach these empty methods.

This approach perpetuates unrealistic standards and misunderstandings in dating, contributing to a culture that values appearance and status over genuine connection and emotional intelligence. In an age dominated by social media, where curated images and highlight reels often serve as benchmarks for attraction, countless individuals are left feeling inadequate or pressured to conform to these superficial ideals. As a result, many individuals may find themselves struggling with relationships that lack depth and authenticity, ultimately hindering their ability to form healthier, more meaningful connections in their romantic lives. This disconnection can lead to cycles of temporary relationships that are rooted in illusion rather than truth, fostering feelings of loneliness and despair as people navigate through a landscape where genuine emotion is frequently overshadowed by mere aesthetics.
