O VIDEO DIA DA CAPOEIRA ANGOLA (8/3/26)

Capoeira Angola is a traditional Afro-Brazilian martial art rooted in the 16th-century transatlantic slave trade, developed by enslaved Africans and Indigenous groups for survival and cultural resistance. Unlike Capoeira Regional, it emphasizes its African roots, rituals, and oral traditions, utilizing a strategic, low-to-the-ground style. Formalized in 1941 by Mestre Pastinha when he opened the Centro Esportivo de Capoeira Angola at Pelourinho No. 19, the practice is guided by a traditional band in a roda. The deliberate, grounded movements and intricate footwork prioritize strategy, economy of movement, and malícia (cunning deception) over brute strength. The fundamental, fluid, and swaying movement of the Ginga serves as the strategic epicenter of the game, keeping the body mobile, protected, and constantly ready to evade or launch an attack.

Today’s video features old compiled games of legendary elder masters who preserved this rich heritage. It includes rare footage of Mestre João Grande (João Oliveira dos Santos), who was born in 1933 and dedicated over 60 years to teaching Capoeira as a philosophy and a way of life. He is featured alongside Mestre João Pequeno (João Pereira dos Santos, 1917–2011), who spent his lifetime upholding Pastinha’s unique style at his academy in Forte de Santo Antônio Além do Carmo.

Together, João Grande and the late João Pequeno share the distinct honor of being Mestre Pastinha’s two most learned disciples, a title they earned through years of dedicated practice and unwavering commitment to the art of capoeira. Their journey began in the vibrant streets of Bahia, where they immersed themselves in the rhythmic movements and rich traditions taught by their esteemed master. As they honed their skills, both disciples not only perfected their technique but also embraced the philosophical underpinnings of capoeira, understanding it as a form of cultural expression, resistance, and community building. Their mutual respect for one another and shared experiences under the guidance of Mestre Pastinha have solidified their bond, transforming their relationship into one of brotherhood.
