After seeing his students die from gun violence, this principal decided to take action …

“When it all gets down to it, we’re saving lives,” says Akbar Cook, the principal of West Side High School in Newark, New Jersey. Cook founded and directs Lights On, a program that gives students a safe place to go on Friday nights, when crime and gun violence are prevalent. In the past three years, Cook says, West Side hasn’t lost any students to gun violence.
