This is a 1998 documentary about the Angoleiro “Chicago” and his life of Capoeira in Savannah, GA, where the Low Country Capoeira Angola Society was founded.

Contra Mestre Erik “Chicago” Murray, a student of Mestre Joao Grande for over 28 years. was one of thr first students of Mestre Joao Grande when he first came to the United States to teach.

This video was the first video where I saw movements from Capoeira Angola, and it was one of my main inspirations to learn Capoeira Angola. It was from that documentary that I saw that Capoeira Angola is a beautiful, timeless tradition, and after that documentary (And a couple of others), that I told myself that I was going to find a teacher and commit myself into learning everything I can about this tradition, hence one of the reasons I ended up creating this website.

In this story, Jesse discusses a shocking incident in Tallahassee, Florida involving a police officer named Kiersten Oliver. She was captured on her own body camera pouring out an unopened bottle of liquor onto the ground and then returning the bottle to the suspect’s vehicle. She later used this as the basis for arresting and charging Calvin Riley Sr.

Capoeira Gathering at Barracão D’Angola

A classic weekly Capoeira gathering at Barracão D’Angola in Serra Grande took place on January 10, 2015. This event was a special occasion with Mestre Cabello, Mestre Joel, Mestre Jogo de Dentro, Dinho Nascimento, Contra Mestre Toicinho, and students from Centro de Capoeira Angola OuroVerde coming together. The energy and sense of community during the event were felt throughout the roda as the practitioners showcased their skills in this traditional art form.

Mestre Joel, Mestre Jogo de Dentro, and Dinho Nascimento’s expertise added depth to the experience. With the presence of CM Toicinho and the participation of the students from Centro de Capoeira Angola OuroVerde, a diverse range of talents and a shared passion for Capoeira Angola filled the roda. Such gatherings play a crucial role in preserving and nurturing this vibrant cultural heritage, bringing together practitioners to celebrate the history, music, and movements of Capoeira.

Furthermore, the Lozi people mark the success of their king’s journey with a vibrant three-day festival, featuring elaborate rituals that pay homage to their ancestors and involve the opening of tombs. These instances not only showcase the interconnectedness of humanity but also highlight the rich tapestry of traditions and customs found across the globe.

It’s deeply troubling to consider the detrimental impact of such a trend within educational institutions. The nurturing environment of schools should promote inclusivity, understanding, and empathy. Therefore, it is essential for educators, policymakers, and communities to address and combat any form of racism or discrimination, fostering an atmosphere where all individuals, regardless of race, feel safe, respected, and valued. Initiating open discussions, implementing diversity training, and revising curriculum to accurately reflect the contributions of all races and cultures are pivotal steps towards creating a more inclusive and equitable educational system. It’s crucial to work collectively towards dismantling systemic racism and fostering a culture of acceptance and appreciation for diversity within our schools and beyond.
