For the Angoleiro, a student and master of Capoeira Angola, life is a constant jogo (game/dance) where power dynamics are subtle yet profound. The 20th Law is translated into the core Capoeira concepts of malícia (cunning, street smarts) and corpo fechado (literally “closed body,” meaning spiritual and mental protection).

  1. Strategic Neutrality and the Malícia:
    An Angoleiro must cultivate malícia—the ability to read the unspoken intentions of others and to navigate conflicts without taking a permanent, limiting side. Committing absolutely to one faction, one patron, or one rigid dogma is to forfeit the ultimate weapon: unpredictability. In the roda (the circle where Capoeira is played), an opponent who is too predictable is easily countered. Similarly, in life, an individual too closely aligned with a singular source of power becomes vulnerable to that source’s eventual downfall or changing whims. The Angoleiro maintains a position of watchful neutrality, allowing them to shift alliances or retreat gracefully when necessary, mirroring the evasive, fluid movements of the jogo.
  2. Freedom of Movement and the Ginga:
    The ginga is the foundational, continuous movement of Capoeira. It is not merely a warm-up; it is a philosophy of perpetual motion and non-commitment to a fixed point. An Angoleiro who commits to a static position in the roda is immediately exposed to attack. Applying this to the 20th Law, “Do Not Commit to Anyone” means never allowing a single person, organization, or ideology to become your permanent, unmoving center. This freedom ensures the Angoleiro‘s path is always their own, enabling them to move around and utilize multiple resources (patrons, teachers, communities) without being bound by their limitations or demands. The wise master learned not to be permanently indebted. The law advises keeping a distance even from powerful mentors or Mestres once their essential teachings have been absorbed. While respect and loyalty are paramount, absolute commitment risks becoming a mere reflection or extension of the patron, stifling one’s own unique development. The goal is to establish one’s own independent school and authority—a roda that orbits no one but is respected by all.

    By refusing to commit fully, the Angoleiro keeps their services scarce and their value high. If you are known to be solely dedicated to one cause, your commitment is assumed, and your influence diminishes. If you are the sought-after neutral expert—the one who can be temporarily persuaded by various sides—both parties will vie for your attention and loyalty, granting you greater leverage and independence than a fully committed subordinate. This strategic ambiguity is the essence of advanced jogo.

Okay, I realize this is a scene from the movie Zombie land, and not a real person… But this is how a MALANDRO operates. The gas station attendant, with a sly smile, thought he would get away with pocketing $3000 for the seemingly mundane transaction, completely underestimating the situational awareness of those around him. So the $400 he gave to the little girl was nothing more than a minimal sacrifice, a mere distraction to keep her quiet and compliant. It showcased the lengths to which he would go to secure his gain, reflecting a calculated mindset often seen in the most cunning of swindlers. The best cons not only deceive but also make the victim want to participate, creating a web of manipulation that entices their targets to willingly engage in the deception. This creates a false sense of partnership, leaving the victim oblivious to the true motives at play, often resulting in their own misfortune.

Like I said, this series was created to show scams like these, so hopefully, you don’t fall for them. By shedding light on the tactics and strategies employed by scammers, we aim to empower viewers with the knowledge they need to recognize and avoid becoming victims. Well, it actually became a holiday in 1990, but today’s the first time I ever heard about it.

Harriet Tubman Day is celebrated on March 10 every year, serving as a powerful reminder of her incredible legacy. If you’ve never heard of Harriet Tubman, she was a former slave who fought tirelessly to free other slaves by assisting them in fleeing their captors through remarkable courage and ingenuity.

Tubman is celebrated all around the United States, especially in Maryland and New York, two states that held great significance in her life and activism. She is most commonly known for the Underground Railroad, which refers to the network of safe houses and routes she used to help slaves escape to freedom, risking her own life in the process. Harriet Tubman Day is a day to remember the heroic actions of this great woman and honor her work by fighting racism wherever you see it, promoting equality and justice, and continuing her legacy of resilience and hope for future generations. Through education and awareness, we can ensure that the sacrifices she made are never forgotten, inspiring others to stand up against oppression and injustice.

For the angoleiro, this law transcends mere social strategy; it becomes a commandment concerning personal honor, respect (respeito), and the sanctity of the roda (the circle where capoeira is played).

The Roda as a Microcosm of Power

In the roda of Capoeira Angola, power is not measured by physical strength or winning a fight, but by presence, control, and the ability to dictate the pace of the jogo (the game). The angoleiro is perpetually testing the boundaries, not just of their opponent, but of the entire environment. When navigating the law, the angoleiro understands that offending the “wrong person” means disrespecting the fundamental principles of the art:

  1. Malandragem (The Art of Deception and Wit): An angoleiro must never mistake a quiet or gentle player for a weak one. True power is often masked by humility. To dismiss a master (Mestre) or even an experienced student (aluno) based on their appearance or initial movements is to commit an act of profound ignorance. The “offense” is the failure to recognize the Mestre’s history, sacrifice, and accumulated knowledge.

Shills and others argue we deserve disrespect for advocating for ourselves, but it’s actually our failure to do so that has led to this disrespect. When we choose to remain silent or passive in the face of injustice, we inadvertently reinforce the very narratives that belittle our worth.

The entire month of March is designated as Women’s History Month in the United States, and many other countries also observe it to celebrate women’s achievements and contributions throughout history. This month serves as a vital reminder of the strides made by women in various fields, including politics, science, arts, and social movements. Through the recognition of their accomplishments, we honor not only the individuals who paved the way for future generations but also the ongoing struggles many women face today. To celebrate, I’m gonna dedicate at least one blog to honor women who shaped our history, exploring their remarkable stories and the lasting impact they have had on society as a whole, while also encouraging discussion on the importance of gender equality and empowerment for women everywhere.

And I’m gonna start with not just 1 woman, but a whole army, the Agojie, the famed “Amazons” of the DAHOMEY KINGDOM of West Africa, as depicted here in the recent movie, “The Woman King”. These extraordinary women were not just fighters; they were warriors who defended their kingdom with unmatched bravery and skill, showcasing the strength and resilience of African heritage.

Now, as much as I liked this movie for bringing their story to the forefront, to me, it is also a reminder for my people to NEVER let Hollywood choose our heroes for us.
