TODAY IN BLACK MEDIA (12/6/24) Part 2

Welcome to TODAY IN BLACK MEDIA, your source for news and cultural events from an African American perspective, highlighting diverse voices and achievements while fostering understanding and empowerment through arts and social justice discussions.

I wasn’t gonna do another Installment today, but then I saw this.

“If you were a slave, you’d be very expensive!”

Yeah, let’s talk about it.

In the city of Belo Horizonte, a man was told that he had a beautiful smile and that if it were in the slavery era, he would be a very expensive slave. This comment not only reflects an individual’s observation but also serves as a stark reminder of the lingering effects of a historical era that has long been deemed unjust and inhumane. Such remarks highlight how the imprint of slavery is still present in the psyche of Brazilian society, revealing deep-seated beliefs and attitudes that have been passed down through generations. The echoes of this past haunt conversations about race and value, as they intertwine with contemporary social dynamics. Furthermore, they invite us to ponder the complex intersections of beauty, worth, and historical context, raising critical questions about how we perceive individuals within societal frameworks. By acknowledging these lingering notions, we can begin to dismantle the undercurrents of inequality that persist today, striving for a more equitable society that recognizes the inherent dignity of all individuals, irrespective of their background or history.

The casual nature of such a statement underscores a troubling normalization of concepts that objectify individuals based on characteristics that, in a just world, should be celebrated rather than com-modified. This reduction of human identity to mere traits fosters a culture where the richness of personal stories and the depth of individual experiences are overlooked, leading to a dehumanization that is both insidious and pervasive. As society continues to grapple with its past, it becomes increasingly important to recognize and challenge these remnants of slavery which still echo in our contemporary values and expectations. By fostering a cultural shift that embraces dignity and respect for all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds, we can work towards an inclusive future that actively rejects such objectification. This requires continuous education, open dialogues, and a commitment to understanding the complexities of identity, ultimately celebrating the diverse fabric of humanity rather than relegating it to simplistic labels or stereotypes.

TODAY IN BLACK MEDIA (12/6/24)

Welcome to TODAY IN BLACK MEDIA, your source for news, cultural events, and discussions from an African American perspective. We aim to highlight diverse voices, celebrate black achievements globally, and delve into narratives that shape our lives. Our platform encourages appreciation of arts, exploration of current affairs, and engagement in social justice discussions, providing a vibrant experience that fosters understanding and empowerment.

In today’s installment, we have today’s “FRIDAY CRIME REPORT” from professor Black Truth.

In 2020, Alyssa Burkett was savagely butchered by her ex-husband, a horrific act that shocked the community and ignited a national conversation about race and justice. The brutality of her murder left a deep scar on the hearts of those who knew her and reverberated through the local community, prompting an outpouring of grief and outrage. In a disturbing twist, her ex-husband donned blackface in hopes that the authorities would pursue a black suspect, which, for a while, they tragically did, diverting efforts away from him. This calculated act of deception not only cast a shadow on the investigation but also forced many to confront uncomfortable truths about racial profiling and its consequences.

This incident not only highlights the lengths to which some will go to manipulate perceptions but also serves as a glaring example of how the police’s institutional racism can embolden would-be murderers. The ramifications of Burkett’s tragic death extend beyond her personal story, shedding light on systemic inequalities that persist within the justice system and sparking urgent discussions on how to combat these deeply rooted issues.

In a society where biases are systemic, the consequences can be deadly, as seen in the heartbreaking tragedy of Alyssa’s family and friends, who are left grappling with the unimaginable loss of a loved one due to a fatal combination of domestic violence and racial stereotypes. Such events do not simply affect individuals; they ripple through communities, leaving families shattered and friends questioning the very fabric of their social environment.

This grave occurrence calls for urgent reforms within law enforcement, emphasizing the need for comprehensive training aimed at addressing implicit biases and ensuring accountability. Furthermore, it demands a broader societal reckoning with the roots of racism that contribute to such heinous acts, urging us to engage in open dialogue, educate ourselves and others, and foster an inclusive culture that actively dismantles discrimination in all its forms. Only through collective action and commitment can we hope to create a safer world where no one suffers from the devastating impacts of prejudice and violence.

STALKERS (12/5/24)

This series explores the complex issue of stalking, focusing on the psychological profiles of stalkers and the impact on victims. It examines real-life cases, raises awareness of stalking signs, legal implications, and the need for societal support. Through expert insights, it highlights the severe emotional distress stalking causes, including anxiety and depression, and how it can disrupt victims’ lives and relationships. Recognizing and addressing this issue is essential for providing support and resources to help affected individuals regain their safety and well-being.

In this installment, we explore the tragic case of Shiori Ino, who was stalked by her ex-partner despite her relentless efforts to seek police assistance.

Her situation escalated dramatically when her ex-partner took the horrifying step of hiring someone to kill her, underscoring not only the severity of her predicament but also the alarming systemic failures in the protective measures intended for victims of stalking.

this chilling act highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive reform in laws aimed at safeguarding individuals who are stalked, as well as the critical importance of providing adequate support and resources for those at risk, ensuring that victims are prioritized and can reclaim their safety in an increasingly threatening environment.

Stalking is a serious issue affecting many individuals, causing lasting emotional and psychological distress such as anxiety and depression that can significantly impact their quality of life. This distress often leads to a heightened state of alertness, making it difficult for victims to feel comfortable or secure in familiar environments. The pervasive nature of stalking disrupts victims’ daily lives, as they might alter routines, avoid certain places, or change contact information out of fear. In addition, it can strain relationships with family and friends, as victims may feel isolated or misunderstood in their experiences, leading to further emotional turmoil. This isolation can contribute to a cycle of despair, where victims struggle to seek help due to feelings of shame or embarrassment. Society must recognize and address this complex problem by creating awareness, offering educational resources, and ensuring accessible support systems. By doing so, we can empower victims to reclaim their sense of safety and well-being, fostering a supportive environment that encourages open dialogue and healing.

CORRUPT POLICE FILES (12/4/24)

The majority of police in the world are good men and women who serve their communities with honor and dignity, often risking their lives to protect others and maintain public order. Unfortunately, there are bad police officers who abuse the law and hurt their communities, tarnishing the reputation of their colleagues and undermining public trust.

These are their stories.

In today’s installment…

Times when corrupt cops faced instant karma in court are always shocking and serve as a vivid reminder of the importance of upholding the law with integrity. In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases where officers who abused their power faced swift justice in the courtroom, revealing the deep impact of their actions on communities and the justice system. These instances not only highlight the significance of accountability within law enforcement but also underscore the crucial role of transparency and fairness in our legal system, emphasizing the need for continuous efforts to maintain public trust and confidence in the justice system.

It is crucial for the general public to have confidence in the integrity and accountability of those tasked with upholding the law and ensuring public safety. These high-profile cases underscore the unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest ethical standards within the law enforcement and justice systems. As these impactful narratives unfold, they reinforce the message that every individual, regardless of status or position, is subject to the same standards of justice and will be held accountable for their actions. This ongoing spotlight on accountability serves as a powerful reminder that the principles of fairness and justice are upheld, and that transparency and integrity are paramount in maintaining public trust.

MAKING MY AUDIENCE MORE AWARE OF A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE.

I’ve decided to make a new series about stalking and stalkers, exploring the disturbing complexities of such behavior, the psychological profiles of individuals who stalk, and the impact it has on victims. This series will delve into real-life cases, discussing the signs of stalking, the legal implications, and how society can better support those affected. Through interviews and expert insights, I aim to shed light on this often misunderstood subject and raise awareness about prevention and response strategies that can help keep individuals safe.

Stalking is a very serious issue, one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. It affects countless individuals across diverse demographics and can lead to severe emotional and psychological distress that often persists long after the stalking behavior has ceased. The impact of stalking can manifest in various ways, including anxiety, depression, and a constant sense of fear, forcing victims to alter their daily lives and routines. Moreover, the implications extend beyond personal harm, influencing relationships with family and friends, as stalked individuals may feel isolated or misunderstood in their experiences. It is crucial for society to recognize and address this pervasive problem, providing support and resources for those affected to reclaim their sense of safety and well-being.

In this first installment…

Keekihime could have never guessed that this stalker would take it this far at Comiket, someone who would do this for over 10 years and end up making her life a living hell while doing what she enjoyed the most in Japan… Cosplaying. From the moment she first donned the costume of her favorite character, she had felt a rush of excitement and belonging, a sense of community with fellow enthusiasts who shared her passion. However, that joy quickly turned into dread as she began to notice the eerie presence of her stalker lurking in the shadows, capturing her smiles and laughter on camera without her consent. What should have been a day filled with fun, creativity, and camaraderie with friends instead transformed into a relentless nightmare.

No matter how hard she tried to shake off the fear, the persistent knowledge that someone had been obsessively tracking her every move, collecting pieces of her life to control and manipulate, weighed heavily on her heart, overshadowing her love for cosplay and turning her once-thrilling experience into a suffocating reality. Each time she donned her favorite costume and stepped into the vibrant world of fantasy and creativity, the exhilarating thrill that used to fill her chest was now replaced by a gnawing anxiety, as if a dark shadow loomed over her. She found herself glancing nervously over her shoulder, wondering if the faceless stalker was lurking nearby, and the escapism she once cherished now felt like a fragile mask, teetering on the brink of shattering, consumed by the unsettling thought that her joy had become a target for someone else’s twisted obsession.

Useless kicks in Capoeira… REALLY!?

HI.

Shout out to Contra Mestre Tom Polonsky for this inspiring video. His dedication to the craft is evident, and it serves as a motivation for practitioners to elevate their skills. Check out his YouTube channel for tutorials and performances suitable for all levels of practitioners, whether you are a novice just starting or an experienced capoeirista looking to refine your technique. Now, I’m not trying to criticize this video in any way…

However, I do have something to say about “useless techniques” in Capoeira, or any martial art for that matter.

And that is this…

The BEST technique executed at the WRONG TIME, will never work. However, the WORST technique, executed at the RIGHT TIME, will work.

In various discussions within the martial arts community, some techniques are often dismissed as impractical or ineffective; however, learning to play Capoeira Angola has taught me that every movement has its place and purpose, serving not just as a physical skill but also as a means of expressing creativity and individuality.

If you think a technique is useless, you should work with it, think about WHY it may have been created in the first place, try it out in different scenarios, and consider its potential applications beyond the obvious… because sometimes, techniques that appear insignificant at first glance can harbor untapped value.

Engaging with these methods can lead to unexpected insights, prompting you to experiment with them in real-life situations that may arise in your daily life or during critical moments. Who knows? Maybe that same “worthless” technique may save your life one day, offering a solution when you least expect it, proving that every approach, no matter how trivial it seems, can contribute to your skill set and preparedness in unforeseen circumstances.

By consistently trying out various techniques and integrating them into your routine, you not only broaden your horizons but also cultivate a mindset that values creativity and adaptability, essential traits that enhance your ability to navigate challenges effectively. Embracing this philosophy can empower you to view every experience as a valuable lesson, ultimately shaping you into a more resourceful individual.

A malandro represents cunning and trickery, navigating life through deception in areas such as love and business. Celebrated for resourcefulness but criticized for a lack of morals, this archetype is seen in folklore as a cautionary symbol. Though often associated with self-serving actions, a malandro might use malandragem to escape unjust situations, even if it involves illegalities.

In fiction, malandragem serves as a wit device, characteristic of an antihero.

WE MUST BE OUR OWN CULTURAL GATEKEEPERS!!!

The cultural heritage of Black Americans is a rich tapestry woven from the threads of history, struggle, and resilience. It encompasses not only music, literature, and art but also shared traditions, spiritual practices, and communal ties that bind communities together. In the face of systemic racism and ongoing efforts to erase their narratives, it is imperative for Black Americans to actively safeguard their cultural expressions and ensure that their contributions are recognized and celebrated.

Appropriation, oftentimes, leads to a dilution of these unique aspects of identity, where elements are taken out of context, stripped of their significance, and com-modified for profit without acknowledgment or respect. Hence, it is crucial for Black Americans to assert their voices, educate others, and create platforms that uphold the integrity of their culture, fostering pride and unity while combating the forces that seek to undermine their identity.

Below, An Afro-Latina woman calls on Black Americans to gate keep their culture, sparking a vital conversation about cultural erasure and appropriation. From hip-hop and R&B to reggaeton and salsa, Black culture has been historically co-opted and whitewashed, often leading to the misrepresentation of its origins and significance. This appropriation not only diminishes the contributions of Black artists but also perpetuates stereotypes that undermine their societal roles.

In this video, we explore why protecting cultural boundaries is essential, the impact of appropriation on community identity and representation, and how solidarity can preserve Black heritage.

By fostering awareness and encouraging dialogue around these pressing issues, we can work collectively to honor the richness of Black culture and ensure that its narratives are authentically represented. It is paramount to understand that cultural boundaries serve not merely as limits but as vital frameworks that protect the integrity of various communities.

The consequences of appropriation extend beyond mere misrepresentation; they can lead to the erasure of histories and the marginalization of voices that have long been silenced. This phenomenon not only robs communities of their narratives but also perpetuates stereotypes and misunderstandings. By actively engaging in discussions about these topics, we create a space where Black voices are amplified and celebrated, allowing for a deeper understanding of the complexities within Black culture.

This dialogue fosters an environment of mutual respect and learning, encouraging individuals from diverse backgrounds to appreciate the richness and diversity that Black culture contributes to society. This not only helps in preserving heritage but also nurtures a sense of pride among community members, inspiring future generations to explore and share their rich cultural legacies. As we recognize and honor the contributions of Black individuals and communities, we pave the way for inclusivity that honors the past while promoting a more equitable future.
