Today…

Most men lose fights due to poor body language, which significantly affects how they’re perceived in confrontations, ultimately leading to unfavorable outcomes. Criminals are particularly adept at sensing weakness, making it essential to maintain a commanding presence that radiates confidence and assertiveness. An improper stance not only betrays a lack of confidence but can also lead to defeat before the fight starts, as opponents may exploit the slightest signs of hesitation.

It is important to understand that in addition to physical postures, facial expressions, gestures, and overall demeanor play critical roles in communicating strength or vulnerability. Mastering these elements can create an aura that deters aggression and instills respect, giving individuals a psychological edge. By developing awareness around body language, one can engage in a form of non-verbal communication that reinforces their ability to navigate confrontations successfully.

This video meticulously outlines three key principles of fighting stance and posture that are crucial for anyone who wishes to project unwavering confidence in their everyday interactions and self-defense scenarios. By mastering these principles, individuals can establish an aura of authority that helps them take control of any situation they may encounter, allowing them to not only defend themselves effectively but also to deter potential aggressors who are attuned to the nuances of human behavior and body language. Understanding how to stand, move, and present oneself can make the difference between being perceived as a target or as someone who is prepared to face challenges.

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THIS WORLD

“Be the change you want to see in the world” emphasizes the importance of taking initiative rather than waiting for others or circumstances to change, encouraging action to make a difference. This powerful statement serves as a reminder that each individual holds the potential to impact their environment positively. By embodying the values and qualities we wish to see, we not only inspire those around us but also create a ripple effect that can lead to broader societal transformation. It calls for personal responsibility, urging us to actively engage in our communities and advocate for the changes we desire, thereby fostering a culture of proactive solutions and collective growth. In essence, it is a challenge to reflect on our own actions and strive for improvement, knowing that real change begins within ourselves.

I first saw this video many years ago, and now that I see it through the eyes of a capoeirista, the video makes much more sense.

Historically, oppressed people are taught to go to their church, their priest, their elected official, etc., and wait for someone to rescue them from their oppression. This deeply ingrained mentality can create a sense of helplessness and stagnation, leading individuals to believe that change is beyond their control.

I learned through capoeira that if we want to help ourselves out of the miserable circumstances we find ourselves in, we must first help ourselves. Capoeira has shown me that empowerment comes from within, and through movement, rhythm, and community, we can take the necessary steps to create our own paths.

Each kick, each dance, and each beat of the berimbau serve as reminders that we hold the power to transform our realities. It’s about breaking free from the shackles of expectation and truly believing that change is not just possible, but achievable through our own efforts and bravery. Therefore, let’s embrace the spirit of capoeira, encouraging not only ourselves but also others around us to take action and be the architects of our destiny.

MALANDROS IN ACTION (3/4/25)… What is a Malandro, exactly?

Hi family,

I know I cover the definition of a Malandro on one of the permament PAGES, but I want to go over it again, to clarify what this series is about.

What is a Malandro? In Capoeira circles, there is a lot of things said about what a malandro is, representing a unique cultural archetype that embodies a blend of cunning, charm, and grace. The malandro is often seen as a trickster, one who navigates through both the complexities of life and the movements within the Capoeira game with a certain finesse that captivates those around them. This character is more than just a performer; they possess an innate ability to read the energy of the roda, adjusting their strategies and movements to flow seamlessly with the rhythm of the game and the interactions with other players.

They often use their wit and cleverness to turn challenges into opportunities, showcasing a playful resilience that draws admiration and respect from those around them. This ability to adapt and thrive in various situations not only highlights their intelligence but also reflects a deep-seated understanding of human nature and social dynamics. The essence of a malandro is deeply intertwined with the philosophy of Capoeira, which celebrates not only martial skill but also artistic expression and social commentary. This dance-fight form serves as a medium for the malandro to communicate stories, convey emotions, and reflect on societal issues, weaving together movement and meaning in a captivating way. By embracing both physicality and creativity, the malandro emerges as a vital figure in the cultural tapestry of this Brazilian art form, embodying the spirit of resistance and the joy of life, inspiring others to appreciate the richness of their heritage and the importance of community.

I created the “Malandros in Action” series, so we can explore the “Modern malandro” in contemporary society, examining their cunning strategies to evade deception and navigate the complexities of urban life. Although the malandro has a deep connection to the rich traditions of Capoeira, most of the individuals I’m showcasing are not capoeiristas, which allows us to broaden our understanding of this archetype. These individuals, often characterized by their resourcefulness and charm, harness their unique skills to outsmart conventional systems, deftly maneuvering through societal expectations and constraints. Their presence is not just about physical prowess; it also embodies a philosophy of resilience and adaptability, making the Malandro an essential figure in the Capoeira community and beyond. Through engaging storytelling and in-depth analysis, we’re delving into the intricate web of social dynamics that enables them to thrive, revealing not just the challenges they face but also the clever tactics they employ to turn obstacles into opportunities and ensure their survival in a constantly shifting landscape.

By examining various case studies and personal narratives, we can highlight how the modern malandro navigates issues such as economic disparities, cultural identity, and social justice, all while fostering a sense of community and collaboration among peers. This series will not only celebrate their ingenuity but also provoke thought about the broader implications of their actions within the urban framework, ultimately enriching our appreciation for their multifaceted existence.

BASIC ELEMENTS OF CAPOEIRA: THE CHAPA DE FRENTE

“There are not more than five musical notes, yet the combinations of these five give rise to more melodies than can ever be heard. There are not more than five primary colours, yet in combination, they produce more hues than can ever been seen. There are not more than five cardinal tastes, yet combinations of
them yield more flavours than can ever be tasted.”
― Sun Tzu, The Art of War

Capoeira Angola is a defensive martial art known for its intricate trap-like defenses designed to catch opponents off guard and provide fluidity in movement. It encompasses 8 basic defenses, each with unique unexpected attacks and counter-attacks based on the opponent’s positioning, which are essential for creating opportunities during a confrontation. Mastery of these movements enables capoeiristas to defend against individuals carrying various weapons, including sticks, clubs, knives, and potentially even firearms with the appropriate skills; by understanding the principles of anatomy, timing, and rhythm, practitioners can enhance their ability to react swiftly and effectively. Furthermore, the art form emphasizes not only physical technique but also the mental aspects of strategy and awareness, allowing capoeiristas to anticipate an opponent’s actions and respond accordingly, making it a holistic approach to self-defense that integrates body and mind.

Chapa de frente (front plate), also called bênção (blessing) is one of the few fundamental kicks in capoeira. It is a front push kick with the sole of the foot. This traditional capoeira kick is direct, firm and fast.

Chapa de frente (front plate) refers to a type of push kick executed with the sole of the foot, known as chapa (plate), originating in the mid-20th century. This movement, characterized by its swift and powerful projection, not only demonstrates skill but also showcases an evolution of martial arts techniques influenced by various cultural practices.

The term Bênção (blessing) ironically relates to the bent starting position, recalling how slave owners in Brazil would ironically greet enslaved Africans with blessings on Sundays, forcing them to show gratitude despite their suffering. This historical context adds a layer of depth and poignancy to the technique, as it reflects the complex relationship between oppressor and oppressed. The benção kick symbolizes this contradiction, appearing as a blessing yet resulting in a kick to the opponent’s belly, thereby merging the evolving martial art with a narrative of resistance and resilience against historical injustices. As practitioners execute this kick, they embody not only physical prowess but also an awareness of the cultural and historical significance embedded within the movements.

The chapa de frente kick targets various body areas, primarily the chest, by lifting the knee and using hip motion to extend the leg, striking with the sole of the foot while keeping the supporting foot grounded. Typically, the capoeirista steps from the ginga into the kick, which can vary in impact from gentle to forceful, depending on the execution and intention behind the movement. This technique requires not only physical strength but also agility and precision, allowing practitioners to balance offense and defense effectively. The effective use of footwork and timing makes the chapa de frente versatile, enabling it to be incorporated into both initiating attacks and countering opponents’ moves. This kick is particularly dangerous due to its powerful application and the sensitivity of the targeted area, making it essential for any capoeirista to practice this technique diligently to ensure control while maximizing its potential. Additionally, the psychological impact of such a kick can unnerve opponents, giving the capoeirista a strategic advantage in both training and performance contexts.

In the capoeira Angola, when a player completes a chapa de frente, they usually promptly descends to the ground, seeking refuge against potential takedowns or counterattacks aimed at their face.

Defense against a front push kick can be practiced in several ways, including blocking the attacker’s leg with crossed forearms to create a solid barrier, effectively absorbing the impact while maintaining balance. Another technique involves rapidly descending by lowering one’s center of gravity to bring down the attacker by suspending their extended leg, thereby destabilizing them and creating an opportunity for further action. Additionally, executing a counterattack with a sweep (rasteira) can be highly effective; this involves using a well-timed movement to off-balance the opponent and redirect their momentum, often catching them off guard and allowing for a swift follow-up technique. Each of these methods not only enhances defensive capabilities but also cultivates a deeper understanding of timing and distance in combat situations.

The speed of movements and the flexibility of the body are essential for both attack and defense in the art of capoeira. A skilled capoeirista quickly discerns the intentions of the attacker, not wasting time in organizing their defense and counterattack. They rely on their refined senses and experience to anticipate the opponent’s next move, allowing them to remain agile and ready to adapt. The mere position of the attacker indicates how they might attack, triggering a cascade of potential responses based on the capoeirista’s knowledge of their craft. This dynamic exchange is not just a battle of strength but a dance of strategy and instinct, where each player must read the other’s body language, rhythm, and subtle cues in order to succeed. Mastery in capoeira requires extensive practice and an acute understanding of timing, space, and technique, ultimately transforming the fight into an engaging and fluid performance of skill.

ICE, ICE, BABY

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

So, Our dear president Donald Trump, and his administration, has been implementing Mass Deportations.

Of course, this is a very divisive topic that elicits strong feelings on all sides, and many black people here seem to have taken some kind of “hands-off policy” to this subject… for whatever reasons.

Well, I’m not one of them.

I wholeheartedly stand with our immigrant brothers and sisters in this fight, recognizing the inherent injustice and human rights violations that accompany such actions. Families are being torn apart, and communities are suffering as a result of these harsh measures that disrupt lives and create an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. The rich tapestry of our society is built on the contributions of immigrants from various backgrounds, woven together by shared dreams and aspirations. Every individual deserves to feel safe and valued in their home and community, free from the threat of separation and discrimination. Therefore, I’m totally against mass deportation that has been going on in this country, as it contradicts the very values of compassion and respect for human dignity that we should uphold as a society.

Plus, Mass Deportations NEVER WORK.

The reason Mass Deportations NEVER work is due to the inherent complexity of human migration and the socio-economic factors that drive individuals to seek better opportunities in different countries. When entire communities are forcibly removed, it not only disrupts lives but also leads to increased tensions and resentment between different cultural groups. Furthermore, deportations often fail to address the root causes of migration, such as poverty, violence, and political instability in their home countries. Instead of resolving issues, these actions can exacerbate them, creating a cycle of displacement and desperation. Additionally, such measures can strain relationships between countries, leading to diplomatic fallout and weakening international cooperation on migration policy. In the long run, a more humane and comprehensive approach that focuses on integration, support, and addressing the reasons behind migration is essential for any meaningful solution.

It is crucial to recognize that immigrants enrich our culture, economy, and social fabric, bringing unique perspectives and strengths that enhance our collective experience. It’s vital for us to unite against these oppressive policies and advocate for a more inclusive approach that honors our collective humanity, fostering an environment where every person can thrive without fear and contribute to the well-being of our nation.

So, what can we do about it? How can we protect our communities against these ICE raids? One way is to organize community meetings to raise awareness and share resources about legal rights. We can collaborate with local advocacy groups that specialize in supporting affected individuals and families, providing them with the necessary tools to navigate these challenges.

Additionally, building networks of support can empower us to stand together, ensuring that everyone knows they are not alone in this fight. It’s essential to encourage community members to document any raids they witness, as this information can be crucial in holding authorities accountable. By taking these proactive steps, we can create a much safer and more resilient community. Furthermore, fostering an environment where individuals feel comfortable sharing their experiences can lead to stronger ties among residents, enhancing trust and collaboration. Workshops and community meetings can be organized to provide education on the documentation process, ensuring that members are fully equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively report incidents. These collective efforts not only serve to protect each individual but also strengthen our community’s voice and influence in advocating for justice and reform.

Shout out to the organization Union Del Barrio for all their incredible work to protect our community.
