The majority of police in the world are good men and women who serve their communities with honor and dignity. Unfortunately, there are bad police officers who abuse the law and hurt their communities. Multiple factors contribute to the differences among law enforcement officers, and it is crucial to address those factors to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals within society.
These are their stories.
In this installment…
Alastair Morgan, whose brother was brutally murdered in 1987, and Neil Woods, a former undercover police officer who now dedicates his life to investigating police corruption, spoke to Insider about the insidious ways in which police corruption actually operates within the force. In the detailed interview, Neil elaborated on his firsthand experiences, breaking down the various types of corruption he witnessed, and even engaged in, while working undercover for a grueling 14-year stint in the UK.
During his time within the police system, Neil arrived at a distressing conclusion: that most “corruption within the police is driven by the substantial income generated from the illicit drugs market,” which has pervasive effects on law enforcement integrity. Alastair Morgan recounted the harrowing circumstances of his brother, Daniel Morgan, who was murdered with a vicious axe in a pub car park in South London in 1987, a shocking act that has left lasting scars on the family and community. He told Insider, “Within three weeks of the murder, I was convinced, because of the events that took place, there had been police involvement in Daniel’s murder. Which was a terrifying prospect,” reflecting on the weight of his discovery.
At the time of the murder, Daniel was managing a detective agency alongside his business partner, Jonathan Rees, further complicating the narrative. Alastair firmly believes that both Jonathan Rees and corrupt police officers collaborated in the conspiracy that led to his brother’s tragic death. Since Daniel Morgan’s murder, there have been five separate police investigations, yet each one seems to have missed the mark. Jonathan Rees and Detective Sergeant Sid Fillery have faced multiple arrests over the years, but shockingly, each time, the charges have been dropped without explanation.
In a turn of events in 2014, both Jonathan Rees and Sid Fillery received substantial six-figure damages from the Metropolitan Police after they successfully brought a malicious prosecution claim against the department, a situation that raises many eyebrows. The pain and frustration of the Morgan family’s battle for justice continued when, in 2021, an independent inquiry concluded that the Met Police was “institutionally corrupt” in its mishandling of the investigation into Daniel Morgan’s murder, a damning assessment that echoed the family’s long-held suspicions. Alastair is currently in the arduous process of suing the Metropolitan Police, underlining the relentless pursuit of truth and justice for his brother, as the murder case remains unsolved. This episode delves deeply into the alarming realities of Police Corruption within the UK, shedding light on a critical issue that demands ongoing attention and reform.

In a PREVIOUS POST, I said I was gonna tell you guys about the song the guys in white were singing in that scene.
Well, today’s the day.
Possibly the most emblematic of all Capoeira songs, Paranauê is a song that every Capoeirista must know, as it encapsulates the spirit and culture of this vibrant martial art. It’s one of the most famous capoeira songs, resonating with enthusiasts even before it gained widespread popularity through the movie “Only the Strong,” where they sang that song to everyone’s delight. The infectious rhythm and powerful lyrics invite participants to embrace the essence of capoeira, creating a sense of unity and celebration.
And despite consisting of only one word, I know when some of you first heard the song and tried to sing along with the chorus, you were singing “Banana way…”, don’t lie. This humorous mix-up has become a fond memory for many, highlighting how capoeira not only teaches physical prowess but also fosters a sense of community and joy among practitioners.
So what is the history and meaning behind this song?
As with pretty much all capoeira history, no one really knows for sure it’s exact origin.
Now before I go on, I just want to point out that there are other versions of this song, each offering a unique interpretation and style that may resonate differently with listeners. Some provide a more upbeat tempo, while others focus on the emotional depth of the lyrics.
I’m posting this one because they include the lyrics in the video, allowing you to fully engage with the song’s message and meaning as you listen. This can enhance your experience, helping you appreciate not only the melody but also the story it tells through its words, making it more relatable and enjoyable for audiences of all backgrounds.
Parana is the name of a state in Brazil, known for its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes. It has come to represent freedom, a theme deeply ingrained in the spirit of the Brazilian people, and is used symbolically in many capoeira songs that celebrate resilience and bravery. One of Capoeira’s most famous and popular songs, “Paranaue,” is particularly renowned among practitioners and enthusiasts alike.
This song essentially refers to the WAR OF PARAGUAY, a significant conflict that took place between Paraguay and Brazil during the late 19th century.
Since logically the masters and rulers did not want to be on the front line, they deployed a large number of slaves to fight for them with an enticing incentive lifeline; an offer of freedom in case they returned alive after bravely battling the enemy. The slaves, often skilled in various forms of combat, had an added advantage in hand-to-hand combat due to their capoeira skills, which enabled many of them to not only survive but to return alive and share their experiences.
Following the harrowing battles, on the way back, from the tumultuous and chaotic front lines, the now ex-slaves gathered on the scenic banks of the Parana river, where they gave vent to their feelings through this beautiful and poignant song that encapsulated their struggles and triumphs. Despite the underlying tragedy of the war, during which almost seventy-five percent of Paraguayans lost their lives in brutal confrontations, it emerged as an important milestone in the life of the slaves of Brazil, marking a pivotal point in their quest for freedom and recognition. This song is not just a reflection of sorrow; it carries with it the resilience and enduring spirit of those who fought for their dignity. Today, it is commemorated to this day throughout the country, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made and the cultural legacy forged in the fires of conflict.
There is also another “origin story” for this song, which gives credit to the creation of the song to Mestre Genaro. Apparently, one day his friend Mestre Paraná (Osvaldo Lisboa dos Santos) did not appear at the roda of Mestre Arthur Emídio, where he was expected, leaving everyone curious about his absence.
Mestre Genaro spontaneously began to sing “Paraná ê, Paraná ê, Paraná! ê cadê você Paraná, Paraná ê, Paraná…”
The second story not quite so romantic as the first one, although it may possibly be the more accurate version.
So, Which version is correct?
Well, who knows? Maybe it just took Mestre Genaro to invent the unmistakable melody for the chorus, which was then combined with the original verses referring to the war, creating a powerful narrative that resonated deeply with listeners.
This innovative blend of music and storytelling not only highlights the struggles faced during that tumultuous time but also brings forth the collective emotions of a community yearning for resilience and unity. Or perhaps it could be that this remarkable combination of a great tune, infused with the rich history and emotional weight of the story, that made Paranauê such a timeless classic, captivating generations with its heartfelt message and stirring harmonies that echo long after the last note fades away.
“There are not more than five musical notes, yet the combinations of these five give rise to more melodies than can ever be heard. There are not more than five primary colours, yet in combination, they produce more hues than can ever been seen. There are not more than five cardinal tastes, yet combinations of them yield more flavours than can ever be tasted.” ― Sun Tzu, The Art of War“
Capoeira Angola is a defensive martial art known for its intricate trap-like defenses designed to catch opponents off guard. It encompasses 8 basic defenses, each with unique unexpected attacks and counter attacks based on the opponent’s positioning. Mastery of these movements enables capoeiristas to defend against individuals carrying various weapons, including sticks, clubs, knives, and potentially even firearms with the appropriate skills.
In this installment, I will introduce you to another fundamental technique and concept of Capoeira… The Queda de Quatro.
As you can see, The Queda de Quatro is a simple yet highly effective defensive move in capoeira, where the capoeirista falls backwards and catches himself with both hands, creating a dynamic transition in the flow of movement. If he extends his knees before catching himself with his hands backward, you end up at a much greater distance from your opponent, allowing for a more strategic repositioning that can be pivotal in a match.
This technique not only aids in evading oncoming attacks but also opens up opportunities for counter-attacks or evasive maneuvers. Moreover, as you can also see, this posture is particularly useful against frontal attacks, as it enables the capoeirista to redirect their energy and momentum, turning the tables on their adversary while maintaining a strong, controlled stance from which to either defend or retaliate.
The versatility and adaptability of the Queda de Quatro make it a foundational skill in the capoeira repertoire, highlighting the art’s emphasis on fluidity, balance, and strategic thinking in combat scenarios.
I think I should mention here that all the basic elements that we discussed in previous posts can be easily and rapidly transformed into the other by simply readjusting the body, and changing your hands or feet. This fluidity is vital as it allows for a seamless transition between different movements, enhancing your overall agility and responsiveness.
Also, in executing any of these elements, neither the body, nor the buttocks touches the ground, only the hands and feet. This is essential for “springing the trap” on your unsuspecting opponent, as maintaining this elevated position not only allows for the ability to move swiftly but also maximizes your agility, enabling you to quickly regain your balance and launch into your next move, keeping your opponent guessing and off-balance.
The hands serve as strong supports, propelling you into various angles and positions that make it difficult for your adversary to predict your actions. The ability to utilize such dynamic transitions, whether through a swift roll or a surprising flip, greatly increases your competitiveness and effectiveness in any physical encounter, as it demonstrates a mastery of both technique and strategy. This intricate dance of motion requires immense control and precision, making these fundamental techniques indispensable for serious practitioners who seek to elevate their skills and gain the upper hand in combat situations.

In this installment, we have this cheesy Dhar Mann episode.
What I love about this episode is that it isn’t just some simplistic story about a nerdy guy gaining physical skills to beat up his tormentors. Instead, it offers a deeper narrative that resonates on multiple levels. I cherish the main character’s journey arc, which evolves from a scared little boy, lost in his insecurities, to a confident young man who embraces his newfound skills not only for his own benefit but to defend others who may feel vulnerable. This transformation highlights the importance of inner strength and resilience.
“With great power, comes great responsibility,” the karate sensei in the video keeps repeating, emphasizing that true strength lies not in aggression, but in the wisdom to use one’s abilities for good and to stand up for those who cannot defend themselves. The episode masterfully illustrates that personal growth is not solely about physical prowess but also about moral courage and the impact one can make in the lives of others.
And, I absolutely LOVE the ending.
This video serves as a great lesson for everyone, especially us martial artists who are always looking for inspiration and motivation to improve ourselves. It highlights important life lessons that are as relevant in the dojo as they are in everyday life. Shout out to Dhar Mann for creating this impactful video that resonates with so many of us seeking growth and understanding. And for those of you who may seem a bit offended that I called this video cheesy, well guess what? I like cheesy videos.
Embracing a little cheesiness can sometimes lead to profound revelations, reminding us of the importance of kindness and perseverance in our journeys.

It explores the complexities of identity, strength, and vulnerability within the black community, shedding light on the societal pressures that shape these narratives. Furthermore, it highlights a provocative observation: those who yell the loudest about how strong they are often turn out to be the weakest, suggesting that true strength lies in humility and self-awareness rather than bravado. This thoughtful reconsideration invites readers to reflect critically on their own beliefs and the societal constructs surrounding masculinity.

These experiences can leave you penniless and heartbroken, shattered by the realization that their affection was a facade. If you’re lucky enough to find genuine love, cherish it deeply, but always proceed with caution and conduct thorough research about the culture, the people, and the realities of dating in a foreign land. In this installment, We have this amazing video, Ties That Bind, Lazos Que Unen: Afro-Diasporic Stick Fighting, Luchas de Palo en las Américas.
A couple of years ago, a rich and engaging conversation took place between Mestre DENNIS NEWSOME from San Diego, Maestro Carlos Padilla from Puerto Rico, and Maestro Doctor Detroit. This dynamic discussion was part of the SO-CAL Kokobale tour, which aimed to explore and celebrate the cultural significance of Afro-Diasporic traditions.
During this extraordinary tour, Hector Luis Rivera, the esteemed director of Taller Bula and Peace Inside Out, hosted a bilingual virtual conversation that dives deep into the fascinating world of Afro-Diasporic Stick Fighting. This event provided an insightful exchange of ideas, shared unique perspectives, and educated participants about the historical roots and contemporary practices of this martial art form, fostering a greater understanding of its cultural heritage and significance in today’s society.
At first, I wasn’t gonna post this here on my blog, because one of the speakers, Maestro Carlos Padilla, has been outed as someone who doesn’t know as much about the art he teaches (Cocobale) as he claims to (Read all about it HERE).
As educators and mentors, it is crucial that we hold ourselves accountable and ensure that what we impart is rooted in genuine knowledge and experience.
However, the reason I decided to post this video here was because it conveys a huge amount of wisdom about the martial arts and culture from the African Diaspora. Such wisdom must be preserved and perpetuated, as it offers profound insights into the rich history and traditions that have shaped not only martial practices but also the identity of communities across the globe.
Understanding these arts goes beyond physical techniques; it encompasses values, respect, and a sense of belonging that connect us all, weaving a rich tapestry of cultural expression that speaks to the essence of our shared humanity. By sharing this video, I hope to inspire others to explore, learn about, and appreciate the depth and significance of these cultural elements, which are not merely art forms but rather important vehicles for storytelling and community bonding. Through this exploration, we can foster a deeper understanding of our roots and those of others, ensuring that they are passed on to future generations, allowing young minds to connect with their heritage while also appreciating the diversity that surrounds them in an ever-changing world.

In this installment, we will explore the 10th law of power in the book, the 48 laws of power by Robert Greene. You can but a copy by clicking HERE.
Law 10: Infection: avoid the unhappy and unlucky.
You’ll die from other’s misery – emotional states are as infectious as diseases, spreading from one person to another without any physical contact. The unfortunate draw misfortune on themselves and will inevitably begin to draw it on you as well, creating a cycle of negativity that can be hard to break. Their pessimism and despair can cloud your judgment and alter your outlook on life.
Instead, it is wise to associate with the happy and fortunate, those who radiate positivity and inspire hope. By surrounding yourself with individuals who uplift and motivate you, you can create a protective barrier against the emotional toxicity that often lurks in negative company. Engaging with such people not only enhances your mood but also encourages personal growth and resilience in the face of challenges. Remember, the company you keep plays a significant role in shaping your perspective and emotional well-being; it influences your thoughts, behaviors, and even your aspirations. Therefore, actively seeking out relationships with positive, supportive individuals can lead to a more fulfilling life, where joy and motivation flourish, allowing you to navigate life’s obstacles with greater ease and determination.
The 10th Law of Attraction: The Rhythm of Intention, Through the Eyes of an Angoleiro
—–Introduction: Beyond the Mere Thought
The Law of Attraction is often simplified to “think positive, and good things will happen.” While positive thought is a crucial component, it is merely the seed. The true mastery of attraction—the 10th Law—lies in the sustained, embodied practice of intention, a concept best understood through the philosophy and movement of Capoeira Angola.
The Angoleiro, a practitioner of Capoeira Angola, understands that intention is not static; it is a rhythm, a continuous dialogue between the inner self and the external world. His movements, simultaneously defensive and playful, are not random acts but physical manifestations of deep-seated purpose, mirroring the subtle yet powerful process by which desires are drawn into reality.I. Ginga: The Foundation of Unwavering Flow
The core movement in Capoeira Angola is the Ginga—a perpetual, rhythmic rocking motion. It is not a stance but a state of being, a continuous flow that never settles into a fixed position.
In Attraction: The Ginga represents the foundational principle of the 10th Law: unwavering faith and continuous alignment. You do not manifest your desire once and then wait; you live in the vibration of that desire perpetually. The Ginga teaches that to stand still is to be vulnerable and stuck; to flow is to maintain momentum and preparedness. An Angoleiro is always moving, always adjusting, always anticipating—just as the most successful attractors are always maintaining a high vibrational frequency, regardless of immediate external circumstances. The Ginga is the commitment to the rhythm of your goal.
II. Malícia: The Subtle Art of Intention
Malícia translates literally to “malice” or “cunning,” but in the context of Capoeira, it signifies the profound, subtle wisdom to read the environment, anticipate the opponent’s moves, and execute a plan that appears effortless and surprising.
In Attraction: Malícia is the Law of Intuitive Action and Energetic Intelligence. It’s the ability to discern the precise moment and path of least resistance for inspired action. It’s not about forcing the outcome; it’s about being spiritually and mentally sharp enough to recognize the opportunities—the “openings” in the universe—that lead directly to your manifestation. The Angoleiro uses his Malícia not to harm, but to conserve energy and move with maximum efficiency. Similarly, the 10th Law dictates that effective attraction involves intelligent, aligned action, not frantic, uninspired effort.
III. Aú: The Courage of Transformation
The Aú is the cartwheel, a move that is deceptively simple yet fundamentally transformative. When performed in the roda (the circle where Capoeira is played), the Aú exposes the Angoleiro to great vulnerability. Yet, it is also a move of escape, transition, and repositioning.
In Attraction: The Aú represents the Law of Courageous Vulnerability and Required Transformation. To attract a major desire, one often has to “turn one’s world upside down”—to shift perspective, exit a comfort zone, or embrace a temporary state of vulnerability (like starting a new business or ending a toxic relationship). The Aú is the willingness to execute the dramatic, necessary energetic shift. It teaches that the path to a higher vibration often requires a moment where you are completely “exposed” to the new reality before you land securely in it.
IV. Axé: The Collective Power of Belief
Axé (pronounced ah-shay) is a Yoruba term fundamental to Afro-Brazilian culture. It embodies the living, spiritual power, the divine force that makes things happen. In the roda, the collective energy, the music, the call-and-response—it all accumulates Axé.In Attraction: Axé is the Law of Resonance and Collective Contribution. It recognizes that while your desire is personal, the energy required to manifest it is often amplified by the world around you. Your focus, your passion, and your rhythm (Ginga) create an energetic vibration that contributes to the collective human experience, and the universe responds in kind. The 10th Law concludes that the most potent manifestations are those that are not purely selfish but carry a degree of Axé—a life force, a benefit, or a powerful energy that elevates the vibration of others as well as the self.
