MALANDROS IN ACTION (3/4/25)… What is a Malandro, exactly?

Hi family,

I know I cover the definition of a Malandro on one of the permament PAGES, but I want to go over it again, to clarify what this series is about.

What is a Malandro? In Capoeira circles, there is a lot of things said about what a malandro is, representing a unique cultural archetype that embodies a blend of cunning, charm, and grace. The malandro is often seen as a trickster, one who navigates through both the complexities of life and the movements within the Capoeira game with a certain finesse that captivates those around them. This character is more than just a performer; they possess an innate ability to read the energy of the roda, adjusting their strategies and movements to flow seamlessly with the rhythm of the game and the interactions with other players.

They often use their wit and cleverness to turn challenges into opportunities, showcasing a playful resilience that draws admiration and respect from those around them. This ability to adapt and thrive in various situations not only highlights their intelligence but also reflects a deep-seated understanding of human nature and social dynamics. The essence of a malandro is deeply intertwined with the philosophy of Capoeira, which celebrates not only martial skill but also artistic expression and social commentary. This dance-fight form serves as a medium for the malandro to communicate stories, convey emotions, and reflect on societal issues, weaving together movement and meaning in a captivating way. By embracing both physicality and creativity, the malandro emerges as a vital figure in the cultural tapestry of this Brazilian art form, embodying the spirit of resistance and the joy of life, inspiring others to appreciate the richness of their heritage and the importance of community.

I created the “Malandros in Action” series, so we can explore the “Modern malandro” in contemporary society, examining their cunning strategies to evade deception and navigate the complexities of urban life. Although the malandro has a deep connection to the rich traditions of Capoeira, most of the individuals I’m showcasing are not capoeiristas, which allows us to broaden our understanding of this archetype. These individuals, often characterized by their resourcefulness and charm, harness their unique skills to outsmart conventional systems, deftly maneuvering through societal expectations and constraints. Their presence is not just about physical prowess; it also embodies a philosophy of resilience and adaptability, making the Malandro an essential figure in the Capoeira community and beyond. Through engaging storytelling and in-depth analysis, we’re delving into the intricate web of social dynamics that enables them to thrive, revealing not just the challenges they face but also the clever tactics they employ to turn obstacles into opportunities and ensure their survival in a constantly shifting landscape.

By examining various case studies and personal narratives, we can highlight how the modern malandro navigates issues such as economic disparities, cultural identity, and social justice, all while fostering a sense of community and collaboration among peers. This series will not only celebrate their ingenuity but also provoke thought about the broader implications of their actions within the urban framework, ultimately enriching our appreciation for their multifaceted existence.

MALANDROS IN ACTION (11/22/24)

Welcome to “Malandros in Action,” where we explore the “Modern malandro” in contemporary society, examining their cunning strategies to evade deception. The malandro is characterized by trickery and resourcefulness, celebrated in folklore as both a cautionary figure and a symbol of rebellion, often engaging in self-serving behavior to navigate unfair circumstances, whether legal or illegal.

In this installment, we explore the exploits of Sam-Bankman-Fried.

Sam Bankman-Fried loved to scam, using his charm and intelligence to manipulate individuals and systems for his own gain while creating an illusion of trustworthiness; he cleverly crafted narratives that positioned him as a philanthropic figure in the cryptocurrency world, gaining the admiration and support of many unsuspecting investors, all the while orchestrating complex schemes that ultimately benefited only himself. Through calculated public appearances and strategic partnerships, he built a persona that masked his duplicitous intentions, drawing in victims who believed in his vision for a brighter financial future, effectively blinding them to the risks that lay beneath his charismatic facade.

This behavior ultimately led to a tangled web of deceit that left many victims in disbelief and longing for justice, as they struggled to make sense of the betrayal that shattered their trust. The ramifications of each dishonest act stretched far beyond initial lies, causing emotional turmoil and financial strain for those caught in the crossfire, affecting not just their personal lives but also their relationships and social standing. As time passed, the victims found themselves grappling with feelings of helplessness and confusion, seeking closure in a seemingly endless quest for accountability and truth. With each passing day, the shadows of doubt and regret loomed larger, making it increasingly challenging to heal from the wounds inflicted—both seen and unseen—by such egregious acts of betrayal. They began to form support networks, sharing their stories in hopes of fostering resilience, understanding, and maybe, just maybe, the justice they rightly deserved.

MALANDROS IN ACTION

I’m changing the name of the “SCAMS AND SCAMMERS” series, into “MALANDROS IN ACTION”, where we delve into what I would like to call the “Modern malandro”, in today’s society. We will cover soe of the strategies they use with the hope that we don’t fall for them.

I cover the definition of a Malandro in another PAGE, but to summarize:

A malandro embodies cunning and trickery, skillfully navigating life through deception in various realms like love and business. This archetype is celebrated for resourcefulness yet condemned for a lack of morals, often depicted in folklore as a cautionary figure or symbol of rebellion. While typically associated with self-serving behavior, a malandro may use malandragem not to harm others but to escape unfair situations, even if it involves illegalities.

In fiction, malandragem serves as a wit device, characteristic of an antihero.

So, in this installment…

Today’s new era of con artists aren’t the hardened, film noir criminals of the past; they’re slick, manipulative social media scammers, or glamorous-looking hustlers determined to fake it until they make it. These modern tricksters are adept at crafting a polished persona online, utilizing platforms such as Instagram and TikTok to curate elaborate narratives that captivate unsuspecting followers. They seek power through first creating an image or idea around themselves, enticing others with promises of wealth, success, and happiness that seem within reach.

Con artistry is not just a desperate act; it’s about gaming the system to accrue influence and status, and then leveraging that into concrete gains. As they manipulate sentiments and exploit trust, the lines between authenticity and fabrication blur, creating a complex landscape where deception flourishes. This phenomenon has become even more pronounced in the digital age, where social media and online platforms serve as fertile ground for skilled manipulators to thrive. The accessibility of information allows con artists to craft meticulously tailored narratives that ensnare their targets, making it increasingly difficult for individuals to discern truth from fiction. Here’s our take on the modern con artist, and whether today’s scams and hustles are just becoming something we’re all expected to take part in, blurring the distinction between right and wrong in a society increasingly enthralled by the illusion of success. As we reflect on this unsettling trend, it raises critical questions about our collective moral compass and the values we hold dear in an era where the perception of success often trumps authenticity.
