The jackknife or switchblade was the capoeiras’ favourite weapon in the 19th century, to the point that it became a symbol of the older capoeira, long before the berimbau. The sportification of capoeira in the 20th century and the emergence of “citizen capoeira” dethroned the jackknife. However, a few capoeira mestres continued to practise the jackknife game, mainly in Maranhão. Roberto Pereira’s beautiful “fictional documentary” reconstructs a jackknife game in the historic centre of São Luís. It included the participation of two navalhistas: mestre Kaká Serafim and contramestre Jorcelso Sousa, students of mestre Alberto Euzamor (1962-2017).
