NAMED AND SHAMED!!! (4/22/25)

Welcome to NAMED AND SHAMED, a groundbreaking new platform where we will explore the troubling issue of martial arts practitioners who misuse their authority for harmful purposes. Each episode will reveal compelling stories of abuse, showcasing the alarming ways in which these individuals distort their expertise to cause harm instead of fostering discipline and respect within their communities. We will dive deep into the personal accounts of affected individuals, shedding light on their struggles and the often-silenced stories of betrayal by those they once trusted. Through enlightening interviews with victims, experts, and advocates, we seek to highlight the urgent need for awareness and protective measures in martial arts communities, emphasizing the importance of creating safe spaces for practitioners and ensuring that the values of honor and integrity are upheld. Our aim is not only to expose these injustices but also to empower victims and encourage conversations that promote healing and reform within the martial arts world.

inspired by the YouTube channel McDojo Life. Since 2013, McDojoLife has supported the martial arts community by providing informative news and investigative journalism, helping the public make informed training choices and ensuring the safety of the industry globally. Through in-depth articles, interviews with experts, and comprehensive reviews of training programs, McDojoLife has become a vital resource for practitioners of all levels, from beginners seeking guidance to seasoned martial artists looking to stay updated on the latest trends and techniques. By shining a light on both positive developments and areas of concern within the community, the platform plays a crucial role in promoting transparency and accountability, fostering an environment where safety and education are prioritized, ultimately benefiting everyone involved in martial arts.

In Today’s installment, I present this episode of McDOJO Breakdown from 2 years ago.

In this McDojo Breakdown, we go down the rabbit hole that is the saga of Maggie Holmes and Carl Massaro, two intertwined lives that captivate with their complexities and setbacks. Their story, filled with unexpected twists and turns, dives deep into the nuances of their relationship, revealing the motivations and events that shaped their paths. This one gets a bit long, but in order to do the story justice, Rob needed to cover it in great detail, exploring not just the surface events but also the emotional fallout, the lessons learned, and how their experiences resonate with anyone grappling with their own challenges in the world of martial arts. Each detail adds depth to their journey, making it a compelling tale worth sharing.

Now, this story is from over 2 years ago, so why bring this up now?

Well, because it seems that Carl Massaro is STILL out there teaching (Click HERE and HERE to check it out), and as a martial artist in a profession where many young people, like Maggie Holmes, go to learn to not be victimized, I have a serious problem with people like Carl using their position as martial art instructors to possibly victimize more young women like her.

The martial arts community is meant to be a sanctuary where individuals can find empowerment, confidence, and protection, yet the presence of someone with questionable intentions can undermine that very foundation. It is disheartening to think about the potential for manipulation and exploitation in an environment that should promote safety and respect.

Young women should feel secure in their training spaces, focusing on self-defense and personal growth, rather than worrying about the very real possibility of encountering a predatory figure. Therefore, it is crucial for us as a community to recognize and address these issues, ensuring that places meant for learning and development remain safe havens for everyone involved.

I have a “bonus” video for you… a candid conversation between Jordan Novack from the Rear Naked Chicks podcast and Rob from McDojolife, as they discuss the vital responsibility of leaders in the martial arts community to actively weed out predators who threaten the safety and integrity of our practices.

What’s with the code of silence allowing bad actors to undermine the values we cherish? This pervasive issue stifles open dialogue and stymies progress. How can we come together to make our community safer for training and growth, where every practitioner feels valued and heard? This discussion not only explores the implications of inaction but also emphasizes the urgent need for transparency and accountability.

We must create robust support systems that empower victims to speak out without fear of retaliation or isolation. By fostering a culture of trust and communication, we can collectively aim for a secure and nurturing martial arts environment for all practitioners, encompassing not just the physical aspects of training but also the emotional and psychological well-being of each individual involved.

This involves implementing educational programs that raise awareness about the signs of abuse and the resources available for those affected, thus increasing the likelihood that victims will feel safe and supported in coming forward. This shared commitment to safety and respect is one of the key reasons I was inspired to create this blog series, hoping to ignite a movement towards meaningful change that not only addresses current issues but also cultivates a positive atmosphere where every practitioner can thrive, feel valued, and engage without fear.
